Catholic Communicators Back Pope’s Call for Priests to Use Digital Media

Brussels, October 6, 2009 (SIGNIS) - SIGNIS (the World Catholic Association for Communication) pledged its support today for Pope Benedict XVI’s call for priests and pastoral workers to use new digital media in their ministry. The Pope has chosen the theme of next year’s World Communications Day to be "The priest and pastoral ministry in a digital world: New media at the service of the Word”.

Commenting on the theme of World Communications Day 2010, the President of SIGNIS, Augustine Loorthusamy said:

“As a worldwide network of Catholic media professionals, with members active in over 120 countries and at every level of Church life, we are committed to helping priests and pastoral workers to understand and use the media in their ministry.

Today, priests and pastoral workers must learn to communicate in a digital environment which is forming the minds and hearts of contemporary men and women. This will be one of the major themes of the forthcoming SIGNIS World Congress, “Children’s Rights, Tomorrow’s Promise” which is taking place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from October 17-21.

SIGNIS members are ready to help train and mentor seminarians, priests and pastoral workers as they explore this new world and learn to communicate the Gospel message to a digital generation.”
