By Deborah Gyapong, Canadian Catholic NewsOTTAWA (CCN) — Twenty-five years ago the dream of a cross-Canada Catholic news network was realized with the birth of Canadian Catholic News — CCN.
In the 1970s, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops sponsored a couple of meetings, recalls CCCB associate general secretary Bede Hubbard, who attended one when he was editor of the Prairie Messenger (from 1976 - 1981).
“There was a lot of talk but no action in the press area,” said former CCCB English-language communications officer Bonnie Brennan, who retired in 1990 after nearly 30 years with the conference. “There was not enough energy, money and bodies to go around.”
One of the driving forces behind early attempts was Bernard Daly, who then worked with the CCCB’s pastoral office. In the early 1960s, Daly ran a news service, covering the Second Vatican Council.
“He would cover the Canadian bishops in Rome, feed it by Teletype — a very old means — back to Ottawa and it would be Teletyped out to the Catholic press,” Brennan said.
